Bye Bye Birdie

I was walking around our yard today when I spied this little guy in a tree, and I snapped the image just before he flew off. I can't remember the official name for these things (shuttlecocks maybe?) and I don't feel like googling today. We've always called them birdies where I live, so it was lucky of me to get a shot of him in a tree. Just makes sense to me, y'know?

Yep, we call them birdies here, too. Never seen one quite this cute before, though.

Wow, I don't think we have those in Southern California, but hey, I am not bird expert.
Keep up the great work! Loved the Perp H ones!

Yep, shuttlecock, shuttle and birdie are all accepted terms used for that animal in your tree.

My further research revealed the following:

Apparently, gym teachers found the term "shuttlecock" to be alarmingly disruptive to gym classes. They maintained that the term's use "caused constant interruptions and daily chaos for instructors" while engaging in their vitally important roles as physical educators of young people. Many described behaviors ranging from obsessive snickering to "unbearable" sexual tension and acting out. And, in some school districts, severe sexual harassment cases and 'tween pregnancies were reported. Eventually, the National Gym Teachers' Association unilaterally decided that "Henceforth, the more innocent term 'birdie' will be used in the presence of youths participating in this controversial sport, Badminton."

Of course, many roosters across the country felt that this censorship was tantamount to book-burning and decided to home school their chicks in the following years...

Thanks all! I don't think they're endangered, but it's true that you don't see them much in the wild anymore. I believe the reason that you don't see them in southern California, is that volleyballs have pushed them out of their natural habitats. I believe that if a womens' pro (bikini wearing) badminton league was formed, they would be plentiful once more.

Thanks also to Butterfly for answering why we may not hear their formal scientific name, except in the presence of very mature adult badminton players.

Terry, your work is wonderful! I love the whimsy of it all and the wry commentaries that accompany them. I've linked your blog and I'm letting several friends of mine know about your work. It is a breath of fresh air! Keep up the great job!

Wow, just got here from Google's "Blogs of Note". I'm fascinated by your work.

Personally, I've always wanted to sculpt with wire and found media, but most of my work looks like, well, what you'd expect from someone with little creative talent, lol.

You're definitely going in my feed reader.

Really love your work, Terry. I would be very interested in seeing this little birdies nest, yeah?

By the way, I really loved "Wicked" as well. In fact, I have a video of one scene from the production posted on my blog. Who was starring in the Chicago production?

Keep up the inspiring work--love the sites!

Thanks once more!

To Jenji, forgot to say earlier that Dee Roscioli and Erin Mackey were the stars of the Chicago production. Neither are household names, but both were fabulous.
