Ending a Dysfunctional Relationship

WOW!!! I love the way this piece so simply speaks volumes. I wonder where you come up with your ideas of "how" you portray things. I just chalk it up to you having a great gift which you choose to share with the world. For that I say, "Thank you".

Tiny scissors!

clearly an analogy of how all children must one day cut the umbilical ties to their parents in order to move on in order to have real lives and provide for themselves

it's also pretty wicked

cheers to you

I love the lighting and the staging so much.

I was thinking it would be one of those little cups on a stick that you have to catch the attached ball with.
This is better! I love how the "oppressor" isn't shown only its shadow.

first the bank pen was trying to escape his job, now this little guy's set to escape.

are you going to buy a bike and head out cross country?

Thank you, thank you, thank you. My Friday morning started out less than stellar. This provided much needed comic relief. You never disappoint.

Very impressive. On one level it's comical, but on another level (especially based on your labels) its so very serious. It has so many dimensions. I guess profound is a word I'm looking for.

I'm cheering for the little rubber ball. Go little one! Go!

If anyone ever questions whether what you do is art, for one, they're idiots. For another, there is so much social commentary you are able to get from a few simple pieces of what to normal people is the flotsam and jetsam of the junk drawer. Great work.

Thanks all.

Your comments are very, very much appreciated.

Yes, the labels give some of my thoughts away, which is why I usually don't bother with them. I'm regretting these already, but what's done is done.

Hannah- no more hints for you!

Hahahahah... yep...you are in a bit of trouble if your paddle only has one ball attached .... he is probably leaving to search for his twin and no amount of motioning him back will change his mind.

I really like this one -- expresses perfectly the idea of being beaten by one you are "attached" to...nice work!

Why are people so afraid of giant ants??

Editing note: dysfunctional not "disfunctional" ;-D

Ditto what lfw said. I totally missed the shadow until I started wondering why you could only see so little of the "oppressor."

Angie Weid said...

This is good! I love the shadow of the paddle. And those teenie, tiny scissors.

Terry, this is awesome. First I thought of apron-strings, then abuse since the poor little guy was "beaten" by a paddle. DEEP! I love the pointy little finger on the paddle's (shadow), you can just hear it saying.."COME BACK HERE NOW!" You are awesome! I am still waiting for the book!!!!! nicole

Hey Terry,

I have a question: You used to have a gadget/widget in your sidebar that would say hello to the different cities/countries that visit your blog. Did you manually update that message yourself every few days or was it pulling the info from Google Analytics for your blog? If so, where did you get the gadget? I liked its simplicity -- and cannot find one that doesn't include a whole list of links and crap I don't want. Just want a simple variable hello message by city/country...

Thanks in advance for any info! ;-D

Thanks for the chuckle at 3:29am. This is helping me get through a long night at work.

Very clever but in a lot of ways it touches a little to close to home.

Absolutely love the tiny scissors!

BAHAHAHahhahaa! I always stop here to see your most recent work, but I don't always comment. I feel like your work speaks for itself.

This one is one of my faves.

Terry said...

Thanks everyone.

Butterfly- I manually did that. I would find a city on the globe on my Google analytics page where a visitor came from, that's all.

Terry,

Yeah that's what I thought -- it was too simple and elegant to come from Google or Blogger. ;-D I'll have to create something in Google gadgets like that -- maybe won't pull from Google Analytics directly, but I can create an XML doc that will supply a doo-hickie with "Hello Shout to Denver" etc. Maybe my clone can work on that...ha!

But, after I asked you that, I did find this cool thing -- FEEDJIT -- which shows where your last few visitors came from either on a map or as flags with City, State (or City, Country) that can be customized and inserted in the sidebar. Thought you might like it! ;-D

Do I detect a theme in the last two pieces? The cutting, breaking, freeing oneself from oppression and unhealthy situations/relationships? Change for the better, for the future?

;-)

LMAO. Very very good.

I discovered your site from your "you make me smile" award from the KS Born site. I love your bent items! So cool and what powerful messages many of them invoke. Best wishes and congrats on your award.

I have just realized I am that ball!!! Now, where are my scissors??

I saw this as my boyfriend was talking AT me, after months of on-off arguing, and a refusal by him to attend couples' therapy.

Thank-you.

Some days you're the ball, some days you're the paddle.

That is a great photo. I thought the same thing as IFW. Great work.

Fantastic! Great idea, love the setup. Your photography impresses as much as your bent objects.

Hurry up little ball and just do it, the paddle's just around the corner!!
This is so cute and so scary at the same time. I like how the emotional attachment is physical, so interesting!
